Meet Dr. James Cantwil
Dr. Cantwil grew up in Warren, MI., and later attended the University of Detroit, where he majored in chemistry. He was accepted to the University Of Detroit School Of Dentistry. While in dental school, he served as Student Government President and was given the honor of becoming the first associate member of the Michigan section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, a prestigious group of dentists committed to excellence in their own practice, and in the profession of dentistry as a whole. Also while in dental school, he was given the opportunity to enter into an accelerated clinical program at Detroit Receiving Hospital. There he worked with patients who were both medically and dentally compromised.
Dr. Cantwil graduated from dental school in 1988, and he was hired to practice as an associate in two offices. In 1989, he began his own private practice in Flint Township and also began teaching in the dental school clinic at the University of Detroit Dental School. He continues to be a mentor to dental students and recent graduates. Dr. Cantwil continued to build his practice and in 1997 moved his practice to its current location on Pierson Rd. in Flushing.
Dr. Cantwil has served as a Board member of the Michigan Dental Association and on numerous committees in the Genesee District, Michigan, and American Dental Associations. He served as President of Genesee District Dental Society for two years. He is also a member of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. As a member of the American College of Dentists, advocacy and ethics for his patients and his profession is seen as a professional responsibility.
Dr. Cantwil married his wife, Elisa, in 1986 and has three children: Elizabeth (1989), Olivia (1992), and Roselyn (1996). He coached girls soccer for over 11 years. Having served as Band Booster Vice President at Flushing High School, and in other volunteer positions, he stays committed to the youth of the Flushing community and continues to visit the schools to present talks on oral health.
Aside from dentistry, his other passion is music. He enjoys playing the piano and attending Flint Symphony Orchestra concerts. He also realizes that his faith is an important part of his life and serves as a Lector at St. John Vianney Church. In keeping with his faith, in 2016, Dr. Cantwil began joining a group of volunteers to the French Creole Mountain Village of Delatte, Haiti, where they provide desperately needed charitable dental care to hundreds of Haitians. Dr. Cantwil has received the "Service above Self" award from the Flushing Rotary, and the Humanitarian Award from the Flint Community Foundation for his many volunteer and charitable efforts throughout his career.
Dr. Cantwil takes great pride in helping his patients and values a strong rapport with them. He customarily takes three times the continuing education that the state requires ensuring that his patients have the benefit of new technology and treatments. His patients know that he will always make himself available to them for questions or concerns about their dental health.
